People learn more by watching and doing than just listening.

Thanks to all of the sponsors and volunteers who were involved in the 2nd annual Howard County Passport to Financial Literacy event held February 5, 2011, and the 1st annual Washington, DC Passport event held June 18, 2011. The final numbers are in: It was a great event, and we provided passports (the program) to 215 kids for Howard County!! A special thanks to Making Change (www.makingchangecenter.org) for all of their hard work and preparation. Thanks to the DC Deputy Mayor's office for their support. We provided the program to 66 teens in DC (and their parents)- not bad for our 1st one! Photos from this year's events are posted on this site under "Recent Events".

Welcome!

Kids today have no idea about the financial realities of living in the world. Unless something happens to better prepare and educate tomorrow’s consumers, mistakes made simply as a result of financial ignorance will keep being made by the next and future generations. Today’s headlines will be duplicated and chronicled in the cover stories of our children’s tomorrows.

It’s critically important to the wealth and well-being of future generations (as well as the current one) to start positive habits early such as saving money and budgeting, as well as avoid making “wrong” decisions that could result in years of financial pain, such as incurring unmanageable levels of credit card debt and having no money to handle the financial unforeseeables that many of them will encounter. So what can we do?

Our answer is PASSPORT TO FINANCIAL LITERACY. The event is designed to be a highly interactive, hands-on experience designed to teach students middle-school aged and above (as well as their parents) many of the financial realities that they are likely to encounter in their lives (and how to maneuver through them). It will bring together both community and local business resources to enrich the lives of the communities in which it is held. Think of the number of middle and high school students enrolled in the school system where YOU are...

A LARGE PERCENTAGE (majority) of them are graduating from school without having a stand-alone course in financial literacy.

The event is based on material found in the book 26 Financial Things to Teach Your Parents (2008).
